Inter Club Matchplay Rounds 1 & 2

Cumbrian Clubs in Round 1 of the Inter Club Matchplay Championships played for places in the 2nd round at a wonderful Windermere GC. It had been prepared with meticulous care by the Head Greenkeeper and presented in beautiful condition which all the players appreciated. A foursomes competition was played by clubs from Cumbria in which 2 pairs of players play against each other in matchplay format. Its an interesting format in which the front two pairings are playing the full course and having to accumulate as much of a lead as possible so that the back pairing have a chance of gauging what will win the match for their team. The first round started with Carlisle B playing against the reigning champions Kirkby Lonsdale, but the Carlisle team had no respect for the past title holders and despatched them with a combined 5 & 3 result. Carlisle A damaged Brampton A's pride by beating them with a large score of 3up and 4up for a 7up mauling. Next it was Penrith A's turn to feel aggrieved by Seascale A who beat Penrith 3up and 7up. Kendal B then beat Appleby 1up and 6up to put them comfortably through to the 2nd round. Seascale B had a much tighter match and only beat Barrow B 1up after the Barrow front men built up a 3up lead, only to see it crumble away by the back pairing of Seascale B who won their match 4up, which meant they won 1up. Furness B were given a walk over result by Brampton B who could not field a full team and had to concede a loss without hitting a ball in anger. Stony Holme knew they had a bye and would feature heavily in the afternoon round. Furness A were to show their close neighbours Barrow that there was no love lost between the two and beat them 3up and 2up.

The Afternoons 2nd round had Carlisle B play against Carlisle A in a very tight match which saw father and son playing against each other, Greg and Kieran Waters, with Greg and Johnny Mossop coming out on top against Kieran and Will Postlethwaite 1up in the front match. The last of the summer wine pairing of Nev Johnstone and bare legged Geoff Nixon saw off the pairing of Marcus Dodd and Chris Edge 2up therefore Carlisle A winning with a combined score of 1up. Seascale A must have played their best golf in the morning to get to the 2nd round, as Kendal B quickly showed them the way home with a 3up win from the front pair and a 5up win from the back pair, combined 8up. Seascale B were left to fly the flag for the west coast club but suffered a similar defeat to a ruthless Furness B 6up and 2up, again 8up. It was a different story for Furness A who faced a rejuvenated Stony Holme GC in Nicky Bell partnering Martin Hand and Rory Thompson with Paul Taylor, they despatched of Furness A 3up in the front pair and 7up in the back pair giving a 10up total.
