Solway Salver at Southerness GC 31st March 2019

A beautiful but bitterly cold Southerness GC were hosts for the annual Solway Salver competition between Cumbria and South of Scotland.

New faces were brought into the squad by County Captain Nev Johnson from Workington GC making it 5 squad members in all from Workington.

The morning Foursomes set off badly and didn't improve much with only 1 outright win in the Foursomes coming from Mike Parker (Penrith) and Lee Sturrock (Brampton). The mornings result went in South of Scotland's favour with a 3 1/2 - 2 1/2 lead.

Cumbria had work to do in the afternoon singles matches.

A disappointing loss in the first match was followed by a win from Seascale's Simon Young followed by a halved match from Kieran Waters. A flurry of wins then came mid team with Boom Boom (Andrew Wolstencroft) ,Darren Whitfield, James Atkinson and Mike Parker, a halved match from Lee Sturrock meant Cumbria needed 1 point from the remaining 4 matches. The next 2 matches were unable to bring in a point and so it was up to new squad member Chris Drabble or Will Bowe to get the Cumbrians a final point to ensure a win.

Fortunately Chris Drabble closed his match with a win on 17 to allow the Cumbrians to retain the Salver for another year. Will Bowe came in with a final win to make the overall result 10 1/2 - 7 1/2 to Cumbria.
