Cumbria v Northumberland at Ulverston
The Daily Telegraph Northern League match between Cumbria and Northumberland was held at a spotless Ulverston Course but was battered by wind and rain all morning. The spirit wasn't dampened though as Cumbria battled away against a very strong and well fancied Northumberland team who had 3 top players missing, but still thought they could steal an away win. The omens weren't looking good as the Geordies powered to a 4-2 win after the morning foursomes with Luke Walker and Richard Mewse winning their foursomes and replacement player Andrew Wolstencroft and James Atkinson the only other Cumbrian winners.
In the afternoon singles the weather eventually eased and the Cumbrians set about reversing a disappointing morning score. New County Champion Richard Mewse could not stem the flow of wins for Northumberland until Will Bowe posted a 1 up win against old foe Andrew Minnikin. Spence for Cumbria couldn't add any points losing 1 down. The tide began to turn with 3 wins in a row from Luke Walker 4 & 3, Stephen Jopson 1 up, and Kieran Waters 3 & 2. Atkinson lost 3 & 2. Andrew Wolstencroft continued the winning streak with a convincing 4 & 3 win over the Tynemouth man Stewart Fell. The wind of change continued with Keswick's Jenkinson getting beat then the match turning point was with Furness' Jon Clarke. With the score at 8-7 to the visitors, Clarke's match was the one that began the hope that the Cumbrian team could win. At 1 up with 2 to play he held his nerve to hang on and finished the match 1 up giving Jon his first County win.
New boy Rory Thompson, of Stony Holme, followed swiftly with a confident 1 up win on his debut appearance. Unfortunately news filtered through that the last match between Nicky Bell of Cumbria and Karl Mossom ended with a 3 & 2 win for the Geordies. Final Score Cumbria 9 Northumberland 9.
