Cumbria kids handed surprise county call-up

Last updated 11:48, Wednesday, 27 August 2008

TEENAGERS Thomas Forster and David Simpson have been handed a shock call-up for Cumbria’s Northern Counties League title-decider on Saturday.

County call: Thomas Foster, 18, with the County Junior Championship trophy

The pair will make their debut in the biggest game of the season against Durham at Dinsdale Spa when victory for Cumbria could land them the championship for only the second time in their history.

Forster, 18, wins his call-up as reward for winning this month’s Cumbria Junior Championship, while Simpson, also 18, is also in good form.

Both are scratch players and will be pitched together in the foursomes.

Cumbria will be without FOUR key players, including star recruit Gary Wolstenholme, who will this weekend begin his quest to secure a place on the European Tour, and Workington trio Will Bowe, Simon Young and Mark Cowan, who are representing their club at the English Club Championships in Wiltshire.

Despite the blow, county captain Cliff Heath insists the team will be strong enough to challenge for the title.

He said: “I’ve lost quite a few guys but let’s be positive about it – it’s giving up-and-coming lads a chance.

“I’ve every faith in them and they are playing well.

“I don’t think it weakens the team a great deal and we can still go to Durham with a great deal of confidence.

“Durham won’t be a push-over, it will be a tough game but our players are good enough.”

Wolstenholme presented Heath with a major dilemma as the former Walker Cup player said he was unavailable, only to later discover he doesn’t need to set off to Dundonald Golf Club in Ayrshire for the Tour School regional qualifier until Saturday night.

But Heath decided to stick to his original team and has named England’s most capped amateur player as the reserve.

He said: “I was sorry to lose Gary but I had already informed the team when he found out he wasn’t going until late Saturday. I am a man of principle and there was no way I could go to anybody and say Gary Wolstenholme is now available and ask them to stand down, and Gary understands that.”

Cumbria: John Longcake (Silloth), Nicky Bell (Carlisle), Martin hand (Carlisle), James Atkinson (Kendal), Geoff Nixon (Brampton), Craig Morrow (Ulverston), Grant Little (Carlisle), Andrew Millray (Windermere), David Simpson (Penrith), Thomas Forster (Brampton), Brian Rhodes (Barrow) and Stephen Jopson (Carlisle).

Crookall-Nixon powers to McGregor victory
4th July 2008

For Immediate Publication

Seb Crookall-Nixon produced some exhilarating final day golf to win the English Boys Under 16 Stroke Play Championship for the McGregor Trophy at High Post in Wiltshire.

Seb Crookall-NixonThe 14 year old from Cumbria (photo courtesy of Tom Ward) carded closing rounds of 71 and 68 for an aggregate of 278, two under par, two strokes better than Birmingham’s Jamie Carney and four shots clear of James Brockington from Henley.

Crookall-Nixon, the only player to finish under par, began the day three strokes behind Paul McPhee from Scotland but his morning 71 put him into a four-way tie on 210 with a round left. And his closing 68 was the perfect way to win the title although he would have finished even more emphatically but for bogeys at the final two holes.

However, he had a big enough lead not to have done serious damage and he was naturally delighted to be crowned champion.

“Hopefully this will see my golfing career take off,” he said. “Things will change dramatically after this and hopefully I’ll catch the eye of the England selectors. I wasn’t feeling confident at the start of the week because I didn’t practice that well. But I felt two under would be good enough to win and I was proved right. I’m also hoping my win will encourage the kids back at my club to come and play and to do what I have done.”

His win will also remind Crookall-Nixon of the day at Gosforth two years ago when persistent rain forced the under 14 championship to be cut to one round which left the Workington lad stranded in third place without a chance to challenge for the title.

There wasn’t a chance the weather would intervene again although a day of brilliant sunshine was punctuated by a couple of heavy downpours over the glorious Wiltshire course.

By the turn in the final round, Crookall-Nixon had got to four under for the tournament while birdies at the 11th and 12th saw him virtually home and dry. A string of pars kept him well clear but three putts at the short 17th and another dropped shot at the last might have put some doubt in his mind.

But his pursuers were making any forward progress and were left to battle for the other places.

Perhaps the most disappointed was McPhee, who led for the first two rounds but faltered on the final day with rounds of 75 and 72 for 283 and joint fourth place.

“I’m a wee bit disappointed that I couldn’t hold on to my lead but I’m delighted to finish in the top five,” he admitted. “Nothing really clicked for me today but that was some performance from Seb.”

Crookall-Nixon, who also won the under 15 award, is now setting his sights on the under 18 title and the Carris Trophy at the end of the month.

“I’ll be up for that and I’ll also be back to defend this next year,” he added.

The Bunker Homepage EGU/ELGA launches "The Bunker" for junior golfers 15.11.2006

The English Golf Union (EGU) and English Ladies’ Golf Association (ELGA) this week launched a new website designed specifically for junior golfers called ‘The Bunker’.

The Bunker includes information for juniors of all ages and abilities and contains practical information on where to play and membership opportunities as well as games and competitions including Cool Clubs, Player Profiles, Spot the Ball, Top Tips.

The website also aims to educate juniors on the EGU and ELGA’s wider work and role within amateur golf by providing links to both the governing bodies websites where juniors can see the progress of England’s top amateur players, find out where the amateur Championships are taking place and find guidance on handicapping and rules of the game.

Richard Flint, Golf Development Manager for the EGU commented, “It is important to give junior golfers information which is not only appropriate but also will be of interest to them. The Bunker website provides a great opportunity to interact with junior golfers and for them to interact with us. These players will after all be the future adult club members and players in years to come.”.

The EGU and ELGA expect The Bunker to be a popular addition to their current websites and are encouraging both juniors and parents to provide feedback on its content. Information in The Bunker will be updated on a regular basis and the EGU and ELGA Golf Development Team would be delighted to receive input from golf clubs and other organisations which could further enhance the site.

To visit ‘The Bunker’ please go to www.englishgolfunion.org/juniorgolf
