Inter Club Strokeplay Championship
Maryport 11th July 2010
Betraying a better weather forecast, the morning round was played in high winds with squally showers, and the prime purpose was to keep the ball in play, with several players coming to grief on the 4th , 10th and 15th holes where out of bounds or blind drives come into play.
The English Club Champions of 2009, Workington A, were first out and posted the best score of the round, with Mark Cowen and Brad Hannah carding 3 over par 73s and Will Bowe with a 75, for 221. The Carlisle A team with Nick Bell on 73, Stephen Jopson, 81 and Greg Waters , 78, slotted in with 232, 11 behind. Some time later, news came in of an in-form Andrew Edwards of Ulverston leading a challenge with a 2 over par 72, the best morning round. Supporting him were Ollie Carr, on 74 and Rhys Hatton on 77, leaving them just 2 adrift of Workington.
The afternoon saw the wind abating a shade and even some sunshine. Such was the battering received in the morning, eleven of the nineteen teams taking part withdrew from the Competition, whether from the feeling that there was no way they could catch the leaders or the imminence of the World Cup Final in the evening, one may never know!
Workington continued from where they left off in the morning, with Mark Cowen improving to a 72, Brad Hannah, soon to be off to a Texas University on a golf related scholarship, making 75 and Will Bowe improving to 73. Their 220 added to the morning 's round of 221 set a target of 441, 21 over par. Again the only serious Contenders were Ulverston and Carlisle. Andrew Edwards posted the best afternoon round of 70 for Ulverston, and Workington sweated in the clubhouse waiting for news on his fellow team members. News came that Ollie Carr had fallen foul of a stream and he eventually carded an 80, and when Rhys Hatton came in with a 75, it was all over. Carlisle with 72s from Bell & Waters and 77 by Jopson, could not improve on their morning position. Silloth B came in with a late challenge with Wong and Lattice scoring commendable 73s but fell short of 3rd place by 4.
Workington had won by 7 shots and will now play again, for the 5th year running, in the English Champion Club Competition at Woodbridge in Suffolk in September.
Final scores: 1, Workington A 441, 2, Ulverston 448, 3, Carlisle A 453, 4, Silloth B 457, 5, Brampton B 473, 6, Whitehaven 480, 7,Workington B 481, 8 Grange Fell 566.
