Herewith my report on the Inter -Club Matchplay Finals at Eden Golf Club, Saturday 30th July.

At sun-drenched Eden Golf Club, presented in excellent order, the four semi-finalists , Furness, Silloth, Workington and Ulverston met for a North-South battle. In the event, the North prevailed with Silloth beating Furness by 6 holes and Workington running out victors over Ulverston by 7 holes.
In the afternoon's final, the outcome was always in doubt. Workington's first pairing of Brad Hannah and Seb Crookall-Nixon continued their good form of the morning round, beating County Captain Martin Hand and Nick Bell by 3 holes. In the second match, coming up the 18th, Silloth's John Longcake and John Carr were leading Mark Cowen and Richard Mewse by 2 holes. Cowen's drive ended in the right-hand bunker under the lip  and Mewse could only pop the ball out onto the lip. There was near drama when Longcake's approach to the green ran off and pulled up just short of the water. A great chip by Carr, leaving Longcake little to do, won the hole and the match went into 'extra time'.

The 19th hole was halved in level 4s. On the second extra hole, Crookall-Nixon and Hannah won the hole leaving Silloth and its second pairing needing to win. On the par 3, Cowen drove his ball onto the green, whilst Carr's drive was long off the left of the green, Longcake's chip was short whilst Mewse lagged vitually dead. When Carr was unable to convert his putt, the hole was conceded and Workington were declared the winners of what had been a fine and pulsating final.

Captain Howard Walker was very happy with the result especially as Workington's star man , Will Bowe had been unable to play, due to commitments on his farm. Walker praised Silloth for their standard of golf  and he looked forward to defending the title in 2012. President Cliff Heath believed this was the closest battle for the title in years and the golf reflected the excellence of the golf course." A great day for County Golf" he said.
