The course was like many others recovering from the April dry spell , but the greens were a credit to the Greens Staff at the Club.
The first round of the last 16, produced some unexpected results. Jack Denwood from Eden beat Under 18 International Seb Crookall-Nixon, the defending Champion, by one hole. The other 4 juniors in the draw all acquitted themselves well but failed to produce a win between them. Nick Bell beat Ryan Shuttleworth by 2 & 1, commenting that Ryan was one to keep an eye on in the future. Nicky Tibbets, showing the results of his continuing improvement this year, fell to Andrew Edwards 2 & 1. Kieron Waters was in a battle against John Longcake and took him all the way to the 18th, after seeing John get a hole-in-one on the Par 3 9th. Notable because it was against a strong wind. Carl Johnstone in a battle against the 2010 Junior Captain Dan Park, fell at the 16th.
In the 2nd round, experience seemed to prevail. Bell beat Denwood 2 &1, whilst Edwards beat Atkinson, who was on his own admittance 'below his best'. The surprising result of the round was the defeat of Longcake by Chapman, by 3 & 2. Longcake at one time was 5 holes down. Will Bowe, the tournament favourite , beat Park by 2 holes.
In the worst of conditions in Round 3, Bell raced into a 4 hole lead over Edwards but the determined Ulverston golfer fought back to level it at the 15th and he ran out the winner by 1 hole. Bowe and Chapman had a prolonged toe to toe battle until Bowe began to pull away in the second half, prevailing by 4 & 3.
In the Final, Bowe raced to a 2 hole lead after 3 holes, but Edwards, sticking to his pre-shot routine on every shot, pulled it back to all square. On the par 5 15th, Bowe put his ball in the trees on the left and an opportunity arose for Edwards to get the advantage, which he took with a birdie 4.
They shared both 16 and 17 and again on 18, Bowe pulled his ball into trees on the left , thereby restricting his access to the ball. Edwards hit his 2nd onto the green and there was no room for Bowe to recover. Edwards ran out a worthy winner on the day by 2 holes.
Edwards remarked that he had been playing well in the early season and he felt before the tournament that he was in with a good chance. He was delighted to pull off the win against Will Bowe, who he always felt was the man in the field to beat.
Captain Martin Hand, whose wife had just produced his fourth son, Harry, was a bit disappointed that the Juniors had not survived the first round, but he had seen a lot of good golf played, which gave him hope for the future. "The new Matchplay Champion will feature in the match at Seascale against Durham", he added " and, on his current form, deservably so".

Hon Secretary. The County Strokeplay Championship 2011 The oldest Championship, started in 1910, in Cumbria County Golf , the Cumbria County Strokeplay, was played out over Saturday and Sunday at the excellently presented Workington Golf Club.
At the end of 36 holes, two home players were disputing the lead after a gusty day weather-wise. William Bowe the local favourite was at 2 under par on 142 and Richard Mewse was close behind on 143. The rest of the pack were biting at their heels.
Sunday morning broke with a shower and an unpredictable wind which eased later in the morning. The two leaders faltered as Adam Chapman from Windermere, aged 16 , broke from the pack with a 71 and was closely followed by local boy Brad Hannah, home from US college, with the best of the morning round 69. These two were overtaken by Brampton's Grant Little who led them by one shot into the final round, as Will Bowe shot an uncharacteristic 76.
The final round started with six players within one shot of the lead , but there was an expectation in the substantial Workington crowd, that Willie Bowe would do something special on his home course and they were not disappointed. However, first of all Adam Chapman posted an excellent 69 to lead Brad Hannah by a shot and Silloth's John Longcake by 2, with Grant Little sandwiched in the middle. However, the fire in Will Bowe started to burn as birdie followed birdie to see him up the final hole recording a 66, 6 under par, one off the course record.
Will was home and dry by 3 shots from the youngster Chapman and Little , with Hannah a further shot back. The crowd had seen some fantastic golf in the fourth round especially from their local champion.
County President Cliff Heath thanked the Workington Club for organising the event, in a most professional way, this venerated competition and he felt it was appropriate that Will Bowe took the title for the seventh time, "an awesome achievement by the most consistent golfer in the County" He remarked also that he had seen good golf from a host of youngsters coming through, who were evident in the shake-out, which augured well for the future of County Golf.
Captain Howard Walker felt that this had been a fantastic championship and the efforts of the Board of the Club and the staff had been thoroughly rewarded. He congratulated William on his victory and wondered what it took to get national recognition for this outstanding Cumbrian golfer. He now qualifies for the Champion of Champions at Woodhall Spa in September, which Will states he is determined to win!
