2009
Brampton Golf Club was the venue for the Cumbria County Stroke Play Championship this week-end. The course was in excellent condition and the weather was predicted to get warmer with the risk of heavy showers. After the first two rounds, Simon Young of Seascale led the field having posted rounds of 69 and 67 with Brampton's own Neville Johnstone following 3 shots behind, including a 66 . Will Bowe of Workington, a winner four times in the past 6 years was 5 shots adrift. Oliver Carr, a 15 year old junior from Ulverston joined James Atkinson of Kendal on 142.
Sunday morning proved to be somewhat cool as the field drove off. However the golf soon warmed up with Simon Young consolidating his position as both he and Johnstone carded 68s. Will Bowe with a 67 moved one shot closer. to be 4 shots adrift.
The fourth round started quietly with the course basking in the hot sunshine,as Young birdied the first to firm up his position but past experience states that you cannot ignore the Bowe Factor! When Will reached the 7th he carded an eagle 2, on the 8th a birdie 3, on the ninth an albatros 2 on a par 5 and a birdie 3 on the tenth. This meant he was 8 under after 10 holes and he was now 2 shots clear of the field. He eventually finished 9 under for the round and took the Championship by 5 clear shots.Young produced a level par round to finish second whilst Grant Little (Brampton) carded a 66 to secure third place.
Will is the man who led the charge in the Big 6 for Cumbria at Seascale but whom the powers that be choose to ignore for national honours!
Will afterwards said he was at a loss to explain this sudden dash up the leaderboard but it was certainly inspired. Simon Young who came second must have been disappointed to have the title snatched from his grasp, but graciously congratulated Will Bowe on his phenomenal round.
The Cumbrians now have to prepare for their match against Yorkshire next Saturday at Huddersfield. Captain Cliff Heath was delighted at Will's success and was very pleased to see members of his squad featuring highly on the leaderboard and obviously in form.
Result 1 W. Bowe (Workington) 271, (17 under par), 2.S Young (Seascale) 276, 3.G Little (Brampton) 283, 4.J Longcake (Silloth) 284,5. N Johnstone ( Brampton) 284, 6.J Atkinson (Kendal) 285,7. A Millray (Windermere) 289,8. O Carr ( Ulverston) 289.
